Philadelphia Community Boathouse Initiative

The PCBI was founded to provide rowing opportunities and accessibility for minority and economically disadvantaged youth of Philadelphia, as well as the general public.

The Initiative's main goal is to build a boathouse primarily for community and youth rowing programs. Boathouse Row is greatly limited in capacity, and cannot currently support community and inner city youth rowing programs. Additionally, limited coaching and costly equipment has excluded the minority community and those of limited means from the sport of rowing in Philadelphia.

The PCBI currently is operating through the PA Rowing Camps out of the Canoe Club. In part to the nearly $30,000 raised through the NK Challenge, learn-to-row camps were held over the past three summers for a number of Philadelphia kids. All equipment, coaching and even transportation was provided at no cost to these families.

These camps were a rousing success and all campers are enthusiastic for next year. All of us who row can attest to the way the sport impacts character development, teamwork, fitness, and confidence. What a better way to give back to the rowing community than through supporting the Philadelphia Community Boathouse Initiative? All net proceeds from the 2005 NK Challenge will again be donated to the PCBI. For more information on PCBI, please contact Amy Giddings at amy@temple.edu.
